After Sania, Sachin `issued’ ration card!

July 3rd, 2009

A pink ration card issued by the state government says world renowned cricketer, Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar, has been living at Lake View Colony in Nellore. The ration card, numbered PAP0982079D0374, has his picture and has the name Ramesh printed in the father’s name column.

Another pink ration card with the number 0982079D0179 has his picture but has been issued in the name Bojjam Ramanaiah, son of Masthanaiah of Lake View Colony. Revenue authorities found these bogus cards among 6,000 such cards they detected during an inspection which involved cross-checking of data.

They also found scores of such cards among the 2 lakh cards issued in Nellore town. On another card, officials found a minor boy’s picture on a white ration card. Another one had a building structure as the beneficiary. A card in the name of a small-time film actor was also found among the bogus cards. Officials blame the private agencies which were hired to issue the cards as responsible for the mess.

Stage set for IT employee suicides

July 3rd, 2009

A former techie himself, and now a member of the TDP, Palem Srikanth Reddy struck a chord today when he prophesised that the stage is set for a staggering number of “IT employee suicides”. The Information Technology industry in the City, Srikanth said, is slowly but surely bleeding from within. In the past three weeks alone over 17,000 employees have been fully or partially laid off from their duties by a mere 7 IT firms. And there are at least another 20,000 employees who will be joining them by the end of this month. Put simply in Hyderabad alone there will be anywhere between 35,000 to 37,000 employees who will be out of work by July end. According to conservative estimates, if one were to think of it in monetary terms , we are talking about a monthly salary loss of Rs. 7.50 crores of money being circulated (35,000 employees drawing an average salary of 25,000 Rs per month) into the economy. Srikanth rightly pointed out that, unlike other sectors, the IT sector employees pay top-of-the-line taxes, rent homes, buy flats, cars and two wheelers, patronize movie halls, coffee shops, fashion outlets and fine dining joints. All this will slow down very rapidly and tellingly. The cyclical impact, Srikanth predicted, will be felt by hundreds of small and medium businesses which in turn will lay off thousands of employees. The TDP leader blasted the Government for blissfully turning a blind eye towards this catastrophic development.

Naidu-Reddy war intensifies

July 3rd, 2009

Chandrababu Naidu accused YSR of running a vendetta-style government typical of a faction leader. Referring to the witch-hunting style of prosecution of Rama Rao the TDP MLA from Kovvur , Chandrababu Naidu said it was indeed surprising that leading investigating agencies could not differentiate between blood and a red-colored chemical like peroxide. The TDP chief said Rama Rao was harassed severely by the police and courts. Naidu also blasted Reddy for pushing KVP into the home ministry and said that YSR was running a parallel government with his goons operating behind the screen. Appointing Sabitha Indira Reddy as the home minister, Naidu said was a political stunt attempted at gaining mileage from the women voters and the national press. Addressing journos after paying a visit to an ailing Rama Rao in the hospital, Naidu thundered saying that “Niddra ponnivanu naenu ee Mukhya Manthrini.”

MBBS @ Rs 65 lakhs & Engineering @ Rs 12 lakhs

July 3rd, 2009

The private professional colleges are offering management quota seats at exorbitant rates flouting the government norms.

The engineering seats in top colleges are found to be offered for as much as Rs 12 lakh for electronics and communication engineering (ECE) branch and Rs 10 lakh for other branches, while the stipulated rate is Rs 92,500. Even the second-grade colleges are demanding anything between Rs 3 lakh and Rs 5 lakh for an engineering seat. The MBBS seat in management quota is “sold” at Rs 50 lakhs to Rs 65 lakhs.

Last year, 21 colleges were served show-cause notices by the government for irregularities in admission under the management quota. But it failed to take any action against any of the erring colleges and “approved” such admissions later.

The seats in Information Technology (IT) and computer science engineering (CSE) branches, which used to attract high price earlier, are now pushed to bottom apparently because of a slowdown in the IT sector.
